Lakewood Country Club is a 27-hole club in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan. It was designed by J. Michael (Mike) Poellet and opened in 1992. It is laid out as three nines — Lake, Wood and Rock — which are combined to make up your eighteen.

The standard combination plays to par 72 at about 7,145 yards from the back tees, 6,219 from the club tees and 5,392 from the front. The Rock nine measures about 3,549 yards from the back. The ground is gently undulating parkland and walks comfortably.

As the name suggests, the stars of this course are water and trees. A broad creek winds through the property, and the fairways are separated by avenues of palms and other trees. On the Lake nine especially the water is a constant presence, and carries over it are asked of you again and again, starting with the par-3 3rd.

Course information

Three characters: Lake, Wood and Rock

The defining feature of Lakewood is that it has three differently named nines: Lake, Wood and Rock. Two of these three are combined to make up your eighteen.

Lake: water in the lead role

As the name says, this is the nine where water tells most strongly. The par-3 3rd in particular asks for a carry over water, and it is the shot that symbolises this course.

On holes played over water, whether you know your carry distance as a number shows up directly in the result. Not “I usually get there” but “the club that certainly clears it”. Make that decision and Lake is far from an unreasonable nine.

Wood: trees and judgement

Wood is a settled arrangement with trees framing the fairways. The hole to see is the par-4 7th. Risk and reward are set out plainly: attack and you gain distance, miss and you pay for it.

On a hole like that, assessing your form honestly matters. On a day when your tee shot is steady it is worth taking on; on a day when it is curving, laying up produces the better score.

Rock: boulders as character

Large boulders are dotted across the Rock nine. It is an unusual sight on the flat land around Bangkok and works as a visual accent. About 3,549 yards from the back tees. It also serves to adjust the character of the day’s round when combined with the other two.

The creek that winds through the property

Understanding the design at Lakewood begins with the broad creek that winds through the property.

A pond is a hazard that simply sits there. Flowing water is different. It appears across holes and comes at you from changing angles. Clear it on one hole and the same stream can be waiting from another angle on the next.

That structure keeps you constantly aware of where the water is now. Look at the shape of the hole from the tee, work out how the water runs, then swing. That small extra step counts for a lot here.

The fairway bunkers are comparatively shallow while the greenside bunkers are deep. In other words, a mistake with the shot into the green costs more than a mistake off the tee.

Location and access

Lakewood is in Bang Chalong, in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan. As the address says — Bangna-Trad KM. 18 — it sits near the 18-kilometre point of Bangna-Trad Road.

That road is the axis along which the courses of Samut Prakan are concentrated. Green Valley, Thana City, Siam Country Club Bangkok and Subhapruek all line the same road. Being able to build an itinerary around several courses is a real advantage of the area.

For transport, use a company car or your own vehicle, or a ride-hailing service such as Grab, which is common in Bangkok. From the city centre the route uses the expressway and Bangna-Trad Road, and journey time varies with traffic. It also lies in an easy direction from Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Driving range

There is a driving range for loosening up before the round. With several holes played over water, confirming your carry distance before you start makes the day’s decisions much easier.

Restaurant

The restaurant covers Thai, Chinese, Japanese and international food. It is easy to suit everyone in a group, and having a Japanese option is practical for anyone on a long stay.

Swimming pool

There is a swimming pool, so the hours beyond golf are covered. That makes it easy to use on a family visit, or when someone in your party does not play.

Caddies and spikes

As is customary in Thailand, every player is accompanied by a caddie. On a twenty-seven-hole property, a caddie who knows that day’s routing is especially valuable. Non-metal spikes only.

The key to putting a score together at Lakewood is how you keep your distance from the water. The design makes the deep greenside bunkers and the water cost more than the shallow fairway bunkers.

• Favour the front of the green. The greenside bunkers are deep, so missing long leaves an awkward recovery.
• Take the club that certainly clears at the 3rd on Lake. There is no reason to cut it fine.
• Judge the 7th on Wood by your form that day. Risk and reward are clear, so an honest assessment is the right answer.

Common mistakes, and how to avoid them

1. Trying to clear water by feel

This is the most common mistake. The sense that “I’ll probably get there” is almost always generous to yourself. If you are not certain, lay up. Keep that decision going and the Lake nine holds no fear.

2. Worrying too much about the fairway bunkers

The fairway bunkers here are comparatively shallow, which means there is a good chance of getting out in one. Rather than changing your line out of excessive caution about them, putting your attention on avoiding the deep greenside bunkers has more effect on your score.

3. Missing long

The bunkers guarding the greens are deep. Miss long and you tend to face a downhill recovery from a deep bunker. Simply keeping to the principle of attacking from the front reduces the big numbers.

4. Not checking the day’s nines

At a twenty-seven-hole club the nines you play can differ from what you assumed at booking. Whether the water-heavy Lake is in the mix changes both how many balls you need and your state of mind. Confirm it with a single question before you start.

What to bring

You can turn up with nothing, but the following change the quality of the round.

• Spare balls — water is in play throughout, so bring more than you think.
• Sunscreen and a hat — essential.
• Non-metal spiked shoes — metal spikes are not permitted.
• Swimwear — if you plan to use the pool.

The best season and time of day

The dry season from about November to February is the most comfortable: humidity drops, and mornings and evenings can feel genuinely cool.

In the hot season from March to May the daytime temperature climbs, so an early start keeps the toll down. On a day when you plan twenty-seven holes, starting early matters even more.

The rainy season from June to October is mostly a short afternoon squall passing through. A morning round is less affected, and tee times are comparatively easy to get. After rain the creek can run higher, though, so judge your carries more carefully.
