Greg Norman, born on February 10, 1955 in Mount Isa, Queensland, is an Australian professional golfer and golf course architect. Known as the Great White Shark, he won the Open Championship in 1986 and again in 1993. Through the 1980s and 1990s he held the world No. 1 ranking for a total of 331 weeks, and he won 20 times on the PGA Tour. He entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2021 he became the first chief executive of LIV Golf.
Greg Norman Golf Course Design, based in Jupiter, Florida, has built about 140 courses in 36 countries on six continents. Doonbeg in Ireland, the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai and Medalist Golf Club in Florida are among its best-known work. What the firm sets out to do is to keep the burden on the natural setting light and to move as little of the land as it can. Norman takes it as his own duty to be there at every stage, from the first walk over untouched ground through design and construction to opening day.
A good deal of that work is in Southeast Asia. Riverside Golf Club in Bogor, which opened in 1994, is regarded as the first Norman course in Indonesia, and there are Norman courses on Batam and Bintan, the two islands within easy reach of Singapore.
