Vijay Singh is a professional golfer, born on February 22, 1963 in Lautoka, Fiji, and known throughout the game as the Big Fijian. He has won three majors: the PGA Championship in 1998 and again in 2004, and the Masters in 2000. He has 34 wins on the PGA Tour in the United States and topped its money list in 2003, 2004 and 2008. In September 2004 he displaced Tiger Woods at the top of the world ranking, and he held the number one position for 32 weeks in all. In 2008 he also took the FedExCup as the season’s champion. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.
His career began in Southeast Asia. He turned professional in 1982 and won the Malaysian PGA Championship in 1984. He then sharpened his game while working as a club professional, first at Keningau Club in the Malaysian state of Sabah and afterwards at Miri Golf Club in Sarawak. His first European Tour victory came at the Volvo Open Championship in Italy in 1989, and from there he moved the centre of his career to the United States.
His work as a golf course architect is the Valley Course at The ELS Club Desaru Coast, in Desaru in the Malaysian state of Johor. He designed it together with Ernie Els Design, the South African’s design company, and it was the first course the firm and Singh had worked on together when it opened on March 31, 2017. The Ocean Course at the same club, which opened in 2016, is the work of Ernie Els Design. The Valley Course was named Best New Course in Asia-Pacific at the 2017 Asian Golf Awards. Of the design, Singh has said that he wanted a course that would complement the Ocean Course while giving visitors a different experience.
Among the courses GoGolf lists, the Valley Course at The ELS Club Desaru Coast in Johor, Malaysia is Singh’s design. The course is not currently open for booking through GoGolf. A fuller introduction to it can be found on the course page.
