Gil Hanse is an American golf course architect, born on August 12, 1963 in New York State. He graduated from the University of Denver and then studied landscape architecture at Cornell University, taking his master’s degree in 1989. While there he was awarded the William Frederick Dreer Award, which took him to Britain and Ireland for a year to study the history of golf course design. He began his career in design at Renaissance Golf Design, Tom Doak’s firm.
In 1993 he founded his own firm, Hanse Golf Course Design, and since 1995 Jim Wagner has been his design partner. The firm is based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Its official site describes it as a deliberately small company and sets out the belief that golf courses are designed, restored and remodelled in the field rather than on paper alone. In 2012 he was chosen to design the first Olympic golf course since 1904, selected from a shortlist that included the design firms of Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course was used at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. His new courses include Castle Stuart in Scotland (2009) and Streamsong Black in Florida (2017), and he is equally known for restoring and remodelling classic courses. The U.S. Open was held four times running on courses Hanse had restored or remodelled: Winged Foot in 2020, The Country Club in 2022, Los Angeles Country Club in 2023 and Oakmont in 2025.
His first course in Asia is Ballyshear Golf Links at Ban Rakat Club, outside Bangkok in Thailand. Built on the site of the former Kiarti Thanee Country Club, it reinterprets for this land the lost 18 holes of Lido on Long Island, New York, designed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor. Play for members began in 2021, and the firm’s list of work gives the opening as 2022.
