Golf in Surabaya
Surabaya is the capital of East Java and, after Jakarta, the second largest city in Indonesia. An old port on the northeast coast of Java, it has long been carried by shipbuilding, shipping and manufacturing. Because it was the scene of fierce fighting in the war of independence, it is known as the City of Heroes.
Being a low, flat port city, the courses inside Surabaya were built alongside residential developments and are level in character. By contrast, drive about an hour south into Pasuruan Regency and the scenery changes to highland courses laid out on mountain slopes. Although both are described as golf in Surabaya, the two are quite different.
Getting there from the airport and the city
The gateway is Juanda International Airport. From there, Ahmad Yani Golf Club is the closest at about 20 minutes, Bukit Darmo Golf in the west of the city takes about 26 minutes and Ciputra Golf Club about 32 minutes. In Pasuruan Regency, Finna is about 35 minutes and Taman Dayu about 42 minutes.
The four city courses sit around 30 minutes from the airport and the two hill courses around 40, so the gap is smaller than you might expect. The reason is that the airport lies towards the south of the city.
There are six golf courses you can play in Surabaya.
They fall into two groups. Three cluster in the west of the city, while the remaining two sit in the hills of Pasuruan Regency, about an hour’s drive south of the centre.

For an area with six courses, the names attached to Surabaya are unusually concentrated: Jack Nicklaus (Taman Dayu), Arnold Palmer (Golf Graha Famili), Jack Nicklaus II (Bukit Darmo), Peter Thomson (Finna) and Andy Dye (Ciputra).
Taman Dayu is Nicklaus senior’s own signature course, while Bukit Darmo was designed by his son, Jack Nicklaus II. Father and son each have work in the same city.
A course opened in 1898
Ahmad Yani Golf Club opened in 1898 and belongs to the oldest group of courses in Indonesia. Its former name was Padang Golf Gunungsari; it took its present name in 1965 in honour of General Ahmad Yani.

The course lies at Bulukandang in Pandaan, Pasuruan Regency, right on the trunk road linking Surabaya and Malang. It opened in 1995 as a Jack Nicklaus signature course.
It measures about 6,514 metres at par 72. You will need to drive roughly an hour south of the centre, but this is the best-known course in Surabaya.

It measures about 6,345 metres at par 72. Being in Pasuruan Regency like Taman Dayu, the two are easy to schedule together.
