Golf in Tangerang
Tangerang is a city in Banten province spreading west of Jakarta. It forms part of Greater Jakarta, and it is here that large master-planned residential and commercial developments such as BSD City, Gading Serpong and Lippo Karawaci have appeared one after another. Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, the country’s main gateway, also falls administratively within Tangerang.
Unlike the dense inner city, what defines the area is broad, deliberately planned land. Most of the golf courses were built as part of those developments, which is why the space given over to the courses themselves is generous.
Getting there from the airport and Jakarta
From Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, Cengkareng Golf Club is the closest at about 4 minutes, Damai Indah PIK takes about 15 minutes and Modern Golf & Country Club about 17 minutes. Five courses lie within 30 minutes of the airport, which makes the area easy to fit in before or after a connecting or departing flight.
From central Jakarta the drive heads west on the toll road. The distance is short, but at certain hours you will meet heavy traffic. We would suggest an early morning tee time.
There are eight golf courses you can play in Tangerang.
An area where world-class designers cluster
What sets Tangerang apart is the list of architects behind its courses. Work by Jack Nicklaus (Damai Indah BSD), Robert Trent Jones Jr. (Damai Indah PIK), Peter Thomson (Modern), Graham Marsh (Gading Raya) and Desmond Muirhead (Imperial Klub Golf) sits within a radius of roughly 30 kilometres.
Peter Thomson was himself a five-time Open champion. In Indonesia, this is the only area where you can plan your golf around the choice of designer.
A course by a Japanese architect
Tigaraksa Golf Residens, in the Tigaraksa district of Tangerang Regency, was laid out by the Japanese architect Hisayuki Watanabe in 1994. The name Takara is the common name and former name used within the Japanese community. Because the official name and the common name differ, it is worth noting both when giving directions.
The area beside Soekarno–Hatta Airport
Cengkareng Golf Club stands inside Soewarna Business Park, adjoining Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Its position lets you drop in when you have time before a connecting or departing flight.

Frequently asked questions about golf in Tangerang
-
Which golf course in Tangerang would you recommend?
If design and pedigree matter most to you, start with the BSD Course at Damai Indah Golf. Next is the PIK Course at the same club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Note that it is located in North Jakarta, roughly an hour's drive from the BSD Course. If you are after length, the answer is Gading Raya Padang Golf & Club at about 6,472 metres, the longest in Tangerang. To keep costs down there are Kedaton Golf & Country Club at about 7,000 yards from the championship tees and Tigaraksa Golf Residens, designed by Hisayuki Watanabe of Japan. And if you are working around a connection, Cengkareng Golf Club is the closest of all at about 4 minutes from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport.

-
When is the best time to play golf in Tangerang?
Tangerang lies on the lowlands and is hot year round, so a morning tee time is the most comfortable choice. The drive from central Jakarta is short, but the toll road is busy at certain hours, so an early start helps on the journey as well.
-
Which course suits a beginner?
The PIK Course at Damai Indah Golf measures about 6,042 metres, roughly 400 metres shorter than the BSD Course, which makes for an easier round. If your time is limited, Cengkareng Golf Club at about 4 minutes from the airport is also simple to schedule. Heat and humidity drain you faster than in a temperate climate, so carry plenty of water.

Where should I stay if golf is the focus?
If you are heading for the BSD Course and Gading Raya, the BSD to Serpong area is the most practical base. For Imperial Klub Golf and Modern Golf & Country Club, staying around Karawaci or Modernland saves travel time. -

Yes. Most of them are 18-hole, par-72 championship layouts, and Kedaton Golf & Country Club offers about 7,000 yards from the championship tees. Gading Raya measures about 6,472 metres, Imperial Klub Golf 6,429 metres and Damai Indah BSD about 6,454 metres, so several options carry enough length for competition. For dates and arrangements for larger groups, contact the course directly.
-
