Golf in Tangerang

Tangerang is a city in Banten province spreading west of Jakarta. It forms part of Greater Jakarta, and it is here that large master-planned residential and commercial developments such as BSD City, Gading Serpong and Lippo Karawaci have appeared one after another. Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, the country’s main gateway, also falls administratively within Tangerang.

Unlike the dense inner city, what defines the area is broad, deliberately planned land. Most of the golf courses were built as part of those developments, which is why the space given over to the courses themselves is generous.

Getting there from the airport and Jakarta

From Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, Cengkareng Golf Club is the closest at about 4 minutes, Damai Indah PIK takes about 15 minutes and Modern Golf & Country Club about 17 minutes. Five courses lie within 30 minutes of the airport, which makes the area easy to fit in before or after a connecting or departing flight.

From central Jakarta the drive heads west on the toll road. The distance is short, but at certain hours you will meet heavy traffic. We would suggest an early morning tee time.

An area where world-class designers cluster

What sets Tangerang apart is the list of architects behind its courses. Work by Jack Nicklaus (Damai Indah BSD), Robert Trent Jones Jr. (Damai Indah PIK), Peter Thomson (Modern), Graham Marsh (Gading Raya) and Desmond Muirhead (Imperial Klub Golf) sits within a radius of roughly 30 kilometres.

Peter Thomson was himself a five-time Open champion. In Indonesia, this is the only area where you can plan your golf around the choice of designer.

A course by a Japanese architect

Tigaraksa Golf Residens, in the Tigaraksa district of Tangerang Regency, was laid out by the Japanese architect Hisayuki Watanabe in 1994. The name Takara is the common name and former name used within the Japanese community. Because the official name and the common name differ, it is worth noting both when giving directions.

The area beside Soekarno–Hatta Airport

Cengkareng Golf Club stands inside Soewarna Business Park, adjoining Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Its position lets you drop in when you have time before a connecting or departing flight.

This course is located at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) in North Jakarta. Of the two Damai Indah Golf courses it is the seaward one, roughly an hour’s drive from the BSD Course. Same name, different place, so confirm the course when you book.

It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. under the concept Spirit of the Sea. At about 6,042 metres it plays roughly 400 metres shorter than the BSD Course.
