Golf in Bandung

Bandung is the capital of West Java, a highland city spread across a basin at around 700 metres. Volcanoes ring it on all sides, so despite sitting close to the equator the climate stays comfortable through the year. Under Dutch rule it was developed as a hill retreat, and buildings from that era still stand around the city, which is why it came to be called the Paris of Java.

Today Bandung is known as a city of textiles and universities, and at weekends it fills with travellers from Jakarta. The golf courses sit on the hillsides and high ground ringing the centre, so cool air and long views are their defining quality.

Getting there from the airport and Jakarta

Husein Sastranegara Airport sits within the city. From there, Dago Heritage 1917 Golf Course is the closest at about 16 minutes, Mountain View Golf Club takes about 19 minutes, and even Jatinangor National Golf & Resort, the furthest, is about 27 minutes. All five courses fall within 30 minutes of the airport.

From Jakarta the drive heads southeast on the toll road. A day trip is not impossible, but the journey is long enough that planning an overnight stay is more realistic.

Parahyangan Golf Bandung measures about 7,298 yards from the back tees, and Jatinangor National Golf & Resort about 7,176 yards from the pro tees. Few areas in Indonesia hold two courses over 7,000 yards.

A course opened in 1917 by a Japanese architect

As the name says, Dago Heritage 1917 Golf Course opened in 1917 and is among the oldest golf courses in Indonesia. It was designed by the Japanese architect Chohei Miyasawa.

It plays 18 holes at par 70 over about 5,677 yards, which is short. This is not a course you overpower with distance, but in the sense that you can walk a century of history exactly as it stands, it is the most distinctive course in Bandung.

The designers behind them

Mountain View Golf Club was designed by Peter Thomson, a five-time Open champion, with Ross Perrett, and opened in 2001. Parahyangan Golf Bandung was the work of JMP Golf Design Group with Bob Moore as lead architect. Bob Moore also designed Royale Jakarta and Suvarna Jakarta in the capital.

The course stands on Jl. Raya Jatinangor Km. 20, in the belt running from Sumedang to Cileunyi. Its former name was Giri Gahana Golf & Resort, and older documents and directories still list it that way. Ride-hailing apps and local directions often respond better to the older name, so it is worth noting both.

From the pro tees it measures about 7,176 yards, second in length only to Parahyangan.

The course sits at Jl. Kopo Km 8,4 in Margahayu, on the south side of Bandung. It opened in 1994 and was designed by Michael Coate & Associates of Australia.

It also goes by the name Padang Golf Sulaiman. While the other courses lie north or east of the city, this one is on the southern side.
