Panya Indra Golf Club is a 27-hole course in the Khan Na Yao district of north-east Bangkok. It was designed by Ron Fream and opened in 1991. The layout is built from three nines — Lagoon, Palm and Garden — which you combine to make up your eighteen.

Lagoon and Palm together play to par 72 at about 7,256 yards from the back tees, 6,181 from the club tees and 5,449 from the front. The Garden nine measures about 3,501 yards from the back. The ground is open parkland with gentle undulation and is comfortable to walk.

The feature that defines this club is the greens. All 27 of them are on the small side, and they are said not to contain a single flat spot between them. Every putt breaks one way or the other, or runs uphill or down. This is a course decided around the greens rather than off the tee.

What 27 holes actually gives you

The clearest strength of Panya Indra is that you can combine three different nines as you please. Lagoon, Palm and Garden each have their own character, so however often you come back you can play a different eighteen from last time.

In general practice, Lagoon and Palm form the main eighteen. Joined together they play to par 72 at about 7,256 yards from the back tees, which is a genuinely testing length for competitive players. Garden, at about 3,501 yards from the back, suits a nine-hole round when time is short or serves to vary the combination.

“Today I want the long version and a look at my distance.” “Today I want nine and a feel for my swing.” Being able to change the shape of the round to suit the day is something an eighteen-hole course cannot offer. Ron Fream’s design and the character of the greens

Ron Fream has designed courses across the world, including much of Asia. Around Bangkok, Windsor Park — formerly Panya Park — is also his work, and the two share a way of weaving strategy into a parkland setting.

At Panya Indra that approach shows most clearly in the greens. All 27 are relatively small, and they are described as having almost no flat ground anywhere on them. As a result every putt breaks, climbs or falls. There is virtually no putt here that simply goes where you aim it.

That design asks two things of you. The first is precision of approach: holding a small green means controlling your distance. The second is reading the line: with this much contour, your caddie’s read is worth listening to.

Conversely, a tee shot that strays a little is not fatal, because the fairways are not desperately narrow. The intent that the round is settled around the greens runs consistently through all 27 holes.

Lagoon

As the name suggests, water is involved throughout this nine. It is the workhorse that pairs with Palm to make the main eighteen, and it has real length. Whether you attack or lay up off the tee shows up directly in your score.

Palm: the island-green par 3 at the 4th

The hole named as Panya Indra’s signature is the island-green par 3 on the Palm nine’s 4th. The green is surrounded by water and there is nowhere to bail out. Distance matters less than reading the wind, choosing the club and committing to simply finding the putting surface.

Island greens exist all over the world, but for most players this becomes the shot they remember from the day. Some golfers say the tension of standing on that tee is reason enough to make the trip.

Garden

A nine of about 3,501 yards from the back tees. Pairing it with either of the others lets you adjust the difficulty and the length of the day. It is also easy to use for nine holes when time is tight, and it is what makes the 27-hole format genuinely flexible.

Night golf as a real option

A defining feature of Panya Indra is that it is set up for night golf. The course is floodlit, so play after dark is possible.

In Bangkok that has practical value. From March to May daytime temperatures climb sharply, and walking eighteen holes can be draining in itself. An evening round means playing in cooler air, with your concentration intact.

A company car or your own vehicle works well, and so do ride-hailing services such as Grab. From the city centre the route uses Ramintra Road and the expressway, and travel times vary considerably by time of day. Weekday mornings and evenings are congested, so leave with time in hand.

If you are playing night golf, note that cars can be harder to find late in the evening. It is worth thinking about your return trip in advance. Please also note that GoGolf does not arrange transfers or shuttles.

Clubhouse and dining

The clubhouse has a dining area known as Panya Kitchen, which you can use before or after your round or at the turn. The club also caters for competitions and group events.

Driving range

There is a floodlit driving range that plays out over water. It is well lit at night, so you can watch the ball fly while you practise. It is equally easy to use for loosening up before you tee off.

Caddies and carts

As is standard in Thailand, every player is accompanied by a caddie. On a course with this many contoured greens, being able to ask for a read is especially valuable. Golf carts are available.

Spikes

Non-metal spikes only. Shoes with metal spikes cannot be used, so check the soles of the shoes you bring.

How to build a score

The key at Panya Indra comes down to how you attack the greens. Simply deciding in advance where you can leave yourself an uphill putt on a small, contoured green will visibly change your putt count.

• Aim at the safe side of the green rather than the flag. On a small green, a short-side miss becomes very hard.
• Prioritise leaving the next putt uphill. Position matters more than pace, and three-putts fall away.
• Consider one more club on the island green. Avoiding the water short is easier to calculate than the rough long.
• Ask your caddie for the line. With this much contour, it is especially useful on a first visit.
• Confirm which nines you are playing. The distances you need change with the combination.

Twenty-seven holes also means you can play the same nine more than once. Learn the tendencies of the greens the first time and change your approach the second. That is part of the pleasure of this club.

Thailand’s year divides into a dry season, a hot season and a rainy season. The dry season from about November to February brings lower humidity and the most comfortable golf of the year.

From March to May the daytime heat rises, which makes an early start — or night golf — the realistic choice. Courses that light up after dark are not common, so Panya Indra is particularly valuable in this season.

From June to October the rain tends to pass through as a short afternoon squall. A morning round is largely unaffected, and tee times are easier to come by.
