Golf in Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. It stands on the northwest coast of Java and is home to more than ten million people. High-rises line Sudirman and Kuningan, forming one of the largest commercial districts in Southeast Asia. As the political and economic centre, it also hosts a great many Japanese corporate offices.

The city is divided into five administrative areas — central, north, south, east and west — and the golf courses are scattered along those lines. Their character splits between the courses in the city centre and those clustered near the airport in the east. Green space is scarce in this city, but once you are inside a course the view changes.

Getting there from the airport and the city

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport lies on the west side of the city and is connected to the centre by toll road. East of the centre is Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, which handles mainly domestic flights. Three courses gather around Halim.

From the airport, Sedayu Indo Golf is the closest at about 18 minutes and Senayan Golf Club about 23 minutes. Royale Jakarta and Suvarna Jakarta in the Halim district are about 43 to 45 minutes. Traffic in Jakarta varies enormously by hour, and in practice journeys often run longer than the table suggests. We would suggest an early morning tee time.

There are nine golf courses you can play in Jakarta, all within DKI Jakarta. Some sit only about 15 minutes’ drive from the central business district, so finishing 18 holes in the morning before the office is a pattern this city genuinely supports.

Unlike the resort islands, most people playing in Jakarta are residents and business travellers. The planning question here is therefore less about spending several days working through the courses and more about how to use a limited half-day.

Short city courses and large courses in the east

The first group are the city-centre layouts in Central and South Jakarta. Senayan Golf Club stands in the Tanah Abang district of Central Jakarta, playing 18 holes at par 69 over about 5,600 yards, which is short. Its site is roughly 32 hectares, designed to fit within the limited land available downtown. Pondok Indah Padang Golf is likewise in the heart of South Jakarta.

The second group are the large courses in the Halim district of East Jakarta. Royale Jakarta Golf Club has 27 holes measuring more than 10,000 metres in total. Suvarna Jakarta Golf Club covers roughly 96 hectares and is likewise a 27-hole layout. Together with Padang Golf Halim, these form the densest concentration of courses in Jakarta.

North Jakarta has Sedayu Indo Golf. It sits on the coast at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) and uses Paspalum Supreme turf, which stands up relatively well to salt. At about 7,132 yards it is among the longest courses in Jakarta.

A 27-hole combination that changes daily

Royale Jakarta and Suvarna Jakarta are both built from three nine-hole loops. Royale Jakarta has North, South and West, while Suvarna Jakarta is laid out as 18 holes at par 72, with each nine at par 36.

At both, which nine-hole combination you play changes according to the date you book. That is why the same course can leave a different impression each time. Confirming the combination when you book makes it easier to picture the day ahead.

The course lies on Jl. Raya Halim Tiga in the Halim district of East Jakarta. At about 15 minutes’ drive from central Jakarta, and with Halim Perdanakusuma Airport close by, it is easy to fit around a business trip.

It was named Indonesia’s best course at the Asian Golf Awards five years running from 2011 to 2016, and hosted the Indonesian Masters from 2011 to 2023. If you can play only one course in Jakarta, start here.

The course is at Jl. Squadron No. 6 in the Halim Perdanakusuma district of East Jakarta. It opened in 2018, which makes it new by Jakarta standards, and was developed on the site of the former Halim 2 course. The architect, Robert Moore Jr., also designed Royale Jakarta.

At roughly 96 hectares it is among the largest sites of any course in Jakarta. Because it is a 27-hole layout, please confirm the combination when you book.

The course lies on Golf Island at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) in North Jakarta. The address is Jl. Marina Indah No. 1. It opened in 2021 and is the newest course in Jakarta.

At about 7,132 yards it is among the longest in the city. Long hitters will find it a genuine test, but with a sensible choice of tee it works across a range of standards. Being on the coast, the turf is Paspalum Supreme, which stands up relatively well to salt.

The course lies at Senayan in the Tanah Abang district of Central Jakarta. The address is Gate IX (Pintu IX), Jl. Asia Afrika. This is a course in the very heart of Jakarta, and on location nothing else comes close.

As par 69 over about 5,600 yards suggests, this is not a course you overpower with distance. It suits anyone who wants to minimise travel and play within limited time.

• Rawamangun, East Jakarta · about 45 minutes’ drive from the city centre
• Founded 1872 (as the Batavia Golf Club / the oldest in Indonesia)
• Classic parkland course · roughly 36 hectares

The course is on Jl. Rawamangun Muka Raya at Rawamangun in East Jakarta. From the centre it is about 45 minutes by way of the Tanjung Priok toll road.

Founded in 1872, it is the oldest golf club in Indonesia; its original name was the Batavia Golf Club. With narrow fairways, mature trees and water and bunkers in play, direction counts for more than distance. We would suggest choosing a tee that suits your game.

The course is at Jl. Jati Indah Raya No. 1 in Cinere, South Jakarta, and opened on 31 December 1988. A local architect laid it out using the natural terrain, across roughly 40 hectares.

The back nine crosses into the city of Depok in West Java. You set out from South Jakarta and cross a provincial boundary partway through the round.

The course is on Jl. Metro Pondok Indah in the heart of South Jakarta. It opened in 1976 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. You can get there by company car or your own vehicle, or with ride-hailing services such as Grab and Gojek.

The course is on Jl. Skadron in East Jakarta, adjoining the south side of Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. It opened in 1971 and is owned and operated by the Indonesian Air Force.

On Mondays it opens only at 12:00. Please bear that in mind if you are planning a start-of-week morning round.

The course is on Jl. Raya Mabes TNI in East Jakarta, inside the headquarters complex of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. It opened in 2002 and was designed by Tom & Team.

The layout is relatively flat, with elephant grass fairways and a shaded setting among mature trees. Many golfers here choose to walk.

Times from the airport are measured from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport with clear traffic. At some hours the drive takes considerably longer.

How to choose

By district

If you are staying in Kuningan or Sudirman, Senayan Golf Club is the shortest hop. If your trip uses Halim Airport, Royale Jakarta or Suvarna Jakarta can be slotted in before or after.

By length

From shortest upwards: Senayan Golf Club (about 5,600 yards), Jakarta Golf Club (about 5,875 yards) and Sedayu Indo Golf (about 7,132 yards). For a round squeezed into a limited morning, choose Senayan Golf Club; to take a course on properly, choose Sedayu Indo Golf.

By travel time

The closest to the centre is Royale Jakarta at about 15 minutes. Next come Padang Golf Halim at about 40 to 50 minutes and Jakarta Golf Club at about 45. Traffic in Jakarta varies enormously by hour, so we would suggest an early morning tee time.
