Ted Parslow

Ted Parslow is an Australian golf course architect. A civil engineer by profession, he built up his experience on sites in Australia and overseas. His profile with the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects (SAGCA) records that he took to golf in his mid-teens and brought his handicap down to single figures. His brother Geoff Parslow became a professional golfer, and in 1973 the two of them pooled what each had learned and founded the design firm E & G Parslow and Associates — an engineer’s eye and a player’s eye under one roof.

In 1992, to answer the work coming from Southeast Asia, the firm set up a Malaysian company, E & G Parslow (M) Sdn Bhd, and Parslow himself moved to Kuala Lumpur. The office has been in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, ever since. In 2013 he took on Jason Winter, long a member of the staff, as his partner and renamed the practice Parslow & Winter Golf Design; Winter holds a degree in environmental design and is a full member of SAGCA. The firm’s website and his SAGCA profile describe the design philosophy in much the same terms: courses that are interesting to play and pleasant to look at, and that are not too costly either to build or to maintain. Parslow is also one of SAGCA’s founding members, and in 2014 he was elected president of the society in succession to Graham Papworth.

The work divides between Australia and Southeast Asia. In Australia he built new courses such as Murray Downs Golf & Country Club in Victoria; in Asia the record on the firm’s website lists National Service Resort & Country Club in Singapore and, in Malaysia, Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, the Valley course at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club, Labuan International Golf Club, Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club and Darulaman Golf & Country Club. What marks the practice out is that it takes on more than new builds: it will rework a single hole, rebuild several courses at once, or draw up the master plan for an entire site, and its name comes up again and again in the renovation of Malaysia’s major courses.

Among the courses listed on GoGolf, Parslow has been involved with six in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (formerly TPC Kuala Lumpur) opened in 1991 and was rebuilt in full from 2008, the West course reopening in 2009 and the East in 2010. At Saujana Golf and Country Club he handled the reworking of the Bunga Raya course, laid out by Ron Fream in 1986. Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort is likewise a Parslow & Winter rebuild of the course Ronald Fream drew when it first opened. • Sebana Golf and Marina Resort (Johor, Malaysia) — 18 holes, par 72, to Parslow’s design, set in a resort with its own marina
• Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort (Genting Highlands, Malaysia) — a highland course, a full Parslow & Winter rebuild of the Ronald Fream layout
• Kinrara Golf Club (Puchong, Malaysia) — a par-71 parkland course, credited as a joint design with Roslee Muda
