Andy Dye is a golf course architect who grew up in Urbana, Ohio. His full name is Roy Anderson Dye III. The course rating site Where2Golf gives his year of birth as around 1954 and names his parents as Roy and Ann Dye. His father, Roy Anderson Dye (1929–1994), read chemical engineering at Yale and spent twenty years in the plastics business before joining his younger brother’s design practice in 1969 — and that younger brother was Pete Dye. Andy is therefore Pete Dye’s nephew, and a cousin of Perry Dye. The Andy Dye Designs website traces the family’s beginnings, back to his grandfather’s generation, to Urbana Country Club, where Andy was raised. Top100Golfcourses introduces him in the same terms, as Pete Dye’s nephew.
His career as an architect began in earnest when he moved to Singapore in 1991. His first commission there was Laguna National Golf & Country Club. According to Where2Golf, he laid out the original form of the Masters course, the club’s first 18 holes, together with Pete and Perry, and later spent three years building the World Classic course, which opened in 2010. Laguna National has long sat near the top of Asia’s course rankings and has staged tournaments including the Johnnie Walker Classic and the Caltex Singapore Open. His own website says he has spent more than thirty years in Asia since then, working on over twenty golf courses and the township plans that went with them. His son, Frashure Dye, has now joined the practice on the construction side.
His Asian work is spread across Southeast Asia. The architect listings on GolfPass include Eagle Ridge Golf & Country Club in the Philippines (the Andy Dye course), Club Intramuros in Manila, Rancho Palos Verdes Golf & Country Club in Davao, Diamond Bay Golf Resort in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Orna Golf & Country Club in Jasin, Malaysia, and Ciputra Golf Club in Indonesia. Of these, the Andy Dye course at Eagle Ridge opened in 1998 and stretches beyond 7,300 yards; Top100Golfcourses presents it as the work of an architect known for pushing the limits of design, a course that divides opinion sharply, and among the hardest of the Pete and Andy courses in Asia.
Among the courses GoGolf lists, one is his: Ciputra Golf Club in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, and it can be booked through GoGolf. The club’s own website credits the design to Andy Dye of Dye Design Corp and describes a stadium-style layout whose holes follow the original hills, valleys and lake. GolfPass records 27 holes in three nines — Valley, Lake and Hill — with Valley flat and demanding accuracy, Lake built around water, and Hill carrying the most movement in both the ground and the greens. It sits inside the CitraLand residential development in western Surabaya.
