Tom Lehman is a professional golfer and golf course architect, born on March 7, 1959 at Austin in Minnesota. He grew up at Alexandria, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota. He turned professional in 1982, but results were slow in coming on the PGA Tour and he served his apprenticeship on the Asian and South African tours and on the developmental tours. In 1996 he won the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes, and in the same year he took the Tour Championship, finished as leading money winner and was named PGA Tour Player of the Year. In April 1997 he rose to number one in the world ranking. He won five times on the PGA Tour and twelve times on the senior PGA Tour Champions. He is the only player to have been named Player of the Year on all three tours — the developmental tour, the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. He played in three Ryder Cups and captained the United States team in 2006.
His firm, Lehman Design Group, was founded in 1996 at Scottsdale, Arizona. He works on his designs together with his partner, the architect Chris Brands. The practice holds to drawing the character of a course out of what the land itself has to give, and to building nothing that could just as well have been put anywhere. Its best-known work is the Dunes Course at The Prairie Club in Valentine, Nebraska, opened in 2010. The firm’s list of works also includes the Sonoran Course at Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona (opened 2005), Encanterra at Queen Creek, Arizona (2010), and The Raven at Lora Bay in Ontario, Canada (with Thomas McBroom, 2006). Among the courses he has designed in collaboration are TPC Twin Cities at Blaine, Minnesota (opened 2000), on which he worked with Arnold Palmer and others, the North Course at The Gallery Club in Marana, Arizona (with John Fought, opened 1998), and the remodelling of Phoenix Country Club (reopened 2002).
In Asia he won the Casio World Open on the Japan tour in 1993. GoGolf does not at present list any course designed by Lehman.
