Mark O’Meara is an American professional golfer and golf course designer, born on January 13, 1957 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He grew up in Mission Viejo, California. In 1979, while at Long Beach State, he won the U.S. Amateur, and he turned professional in 1980. He has won 16 times on the PGA Tour, five of those at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. In 1998, at the age of 41, he took both the Masters and the Open Championship for two majors in a single season, and won the World Match Play Championship in the same year. In 1999 he partnered Tiger Woods to win the World Cup. He played five Ryder Cups. As a senior he won the Senior Players Championship in 2010, and he entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015. He retired from competition after a tournament in September 2024.
He began designing golf courses in the early 2000s under the name O’Meara Design. The first was Grandview Golf Club in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada, which opened in May 2001. The firm describes it as a course that sets wide fairways, shallow bunkers and gently contoured greens against rolling ground, wetland and large changes in elevation. In Ireland he designed the O’Meara course at Carton House in Maynooth, County Kildare, west of Dublin, which opened in 2002. It is a parkland course crossed by a river, and the firm says the brief was for a course that would settle into the landscape as naturally as the historic house does. In the United States he also worked on Tuhaye, near Park City in Utah, which the firm says was named in 2006 among Golf Digest’s top ten new private courses.
O’Meara was known as a player who entered tournaments outside the United States, and in Asia he won twice on the Japan Golf Tour, at the Fujisankei Classic in 1985 and the Tokai Classic in 1992. GoGolf does not at present list any course designed by O’Meara.
