At its outset, golf in Batam was nowhere near as popular as it is today. Understandably so—Batam was first developed as an industrial city, not a holiday hub. Yet over time the island evolved into both a business centre and a tourism destination, thanks in no small part to the explosive growth of neighbouring Singapore’s economy.
Batam is one of Indonesia’s busiest transit islands after Bali and Jakarta. Five ferry terminals connect it with Bintan and Singapore: Nongsapura, Sekupang, Harbour Bay, Waterfront City and Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal.
Roughly 20 km from Singapore, Batam—west of Bintan—features a landscape of small islands, peninsulas and coves. Most of its terrain is relatively flat with a scattering of hills in the interior, perfect for industry, urban development and tourism—including several of Indonesia’s finest resort and golf properties.
Although Batam lies in the tropics, rainfall is high and average daily temperatures sit between 24 °C and 35 °C. That golfer-friendly climate means the game is enjoyed year-round.
While Batam’s resorts are not as lavish as Bintan’s, golf plays a pivotal role here. Affordable green fees paired with international-standard layouts lure players from Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan for weekend and holiday rounds.
The island boasts seven courses popular with overseas golfers:
Palm Springs Golf & Beach Resort was an early pioneer (built 1989, fully revamped 2002). Spanning 228 ha with 27 holes, it remains Batam’s largest track.
The newest is Sukajadi Golf Course, opened in 2009. For top-tier design and deluxe facilities, look to Batam Hills Golf Resort and Tering Bay Golf & Country Club.
With sea views, natural forested hills and testing architecture, Batam’s courses often host tournaments. They open daily, closing only for maintenance or national holidays.
One standout draw is value: fees typically run SGD 118–200 per player, comparable to many Bali venues. Off the course, visitors enjoy resorts, beaches and a thriving local food scene spread across the city.

Below are GoGolf’s recommended tracks, each offering unique features to match your skill level—ideal for novices or seasoned pros alike.
A Greg Norman signature course with five-star facilities and full CCTV surveillance. Expect a challenging layout amid gorgeous scenery—premium, exclusive and priced accordingly.
Larry Nelson and IMG crafted 27 holes overlooking the sea and Singapore’s skyline. Set in Nongsa, it couples beach-resort ambience with extended opening hours. Size and complexity may feel demanding for beginners.
Eighteen holes (≈6,000 m) by Japanese designer Hisamitsu Ohnishi wind past lakes, hills and mature forest. Villas and condos on-site make it perfect for a golf-and-staycation break, though facilities are smaller than at main tourist hubs.
Batam’s only Jack Nicklaus design: nine testing holes atop a ridge with sweeping coastline views. Easy access and a relaxed vibe suit newcomers, but the shorter length limits major-tournament appeal.
Ronald Fream carved this breezy, seaside track for casual yet testing play. Its out-of-town setting ensures tranquillity, but extra travel time could matter for urban-minded guests.
A semi-private layout in an upscale residential precinct—handy to malls and hospitals. Urban convenience and exclusivity shine, though natural scenery is less dramatic than coastal or hill courses.
Accommodating all abilities with multiple play areas, driving range and buggies, Batam Hills ranks among the island’s most luxurious golf resorts. Facilities impress, but sea-cliff vistas found elsewhere are limited here.
