Golf in Putrajaya

Putrajaya is a planned city built from the 1990s to bring Malaysia’s government functions together. It is one of the federal territories and home to the Prime Minister’s Office and most ministries. The city is laid out around a man-made lake and broad green spaces, so it is low-density and journey times are easy to predict.

It sits roughly halfway between central Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), and that location is its main advantage for golf. Because it is a similar distance from both the airport and the city, it is an easy place to fit in a round on the day you arrive or the day you leave.

Getting there from the airport and the city

It is about 42 minutes by car from KLIA, and roughly the same from central Kuala Lumpur. Expressways link it to both, so traffic is less of a problem than in the city centre. A company car or your own car works well, and ride-hailing services such as Grab are convenient.

Because it is equidistant from the airport and the city, you can base yourself in either and still reach it easily. It is a good fit for a long layover, or for a day when your flight home leaves in the evening.

Best season and how to plan the day

Malaysia lies close to the equator and has no distinct dry season. Daytime temperatures reach around 30°C all year and humidity stays high. Rain tends to arrive as short, heavy showers in the afternoon and early evening, so securing an early-morning tee time matters more than picking a season.

How golf is played here

Caddies are the norm, and some courses allow buggies onto the fairway. The grasses are Bermuda and zoysia, so greens may not read the way you are used to. A collared shirt and golf shoes are the standard dress; if in doubt, check with the course beforehand.

  • Designed by Ted Parslow/redesigned by Ted Parslow and Jason Winter in 2009

This 18-hole course sits within the IOI Resort City development and is made up of two nines, Eugenia and Bismarck. It opened in the 1990s as part of a golf complex and was reworked into its current 18-hole layout in 2009.

The course was designed by Australian Ted Parslow, with Jason Winter joining him for the 2009 redesign. Rolling fairways, strategically placed bunkers and man-made lakes shape the layout, and the 18th is the signature hole. From the back tees it measures about 6,027 m.

The fairways are Hybrid Zoysia and the greens Bermuda Tifdwarf. It is also known as the first course in Malaysia to allow buggies onto the fairway, which makes getting around easy on the legs.

How to choose

Choosing your tees

There are three sets of tees: back, club and front. They measure about 6,027 m, 5,361 m and 4,978 m respectively. Heat and humidity wear you down faster than you might expect, so moving one tee forward from your usual helps you stay sharp to the end.

Fitting it into your stay

The trick is to make the most of its position between the airport and the city. Slot it into the afternoon of your arrival day, or a day when you fly out in the evening, and no travel time is wasted. If you are staying several nights and want to play more courses, widen your search to the neighbouring areas.
