Ian Woosnam, born on March 2, 1958 at Oswestry in Shropshire, England, to Welsh parents, is a professional golfer and a golf course architect. He is known as one of the great Welsh players of the game, and everyone calls him Woosie. He turned professional in 1976 and took his first European Tour title at the Swiss Open in 1982. He won 29 times on the European Tour in all and topped its money list in 1987 and 1990. In 1991 he won the Masters, the first Welshman to win a major. In April of that same year he rose to world No. 1, and he held the position for a total of 50 weeks, until March 1992. He played in eight consecutive Ryder Cups from 1983 to 1997, and in 2006 he captained Europe to victory. He was appointed OBE in 2007 and entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017.
As a course designer his work includes Lighthouse Golf Course, which stands on Cape Kaliakra near Balchik on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The resort’s own website introduces the course as the design of Ian Woosnam, a former Ryder Cup captain. It has eighteen holes and hosted a European Senior Tour event in 2018. Irie Fields at Kittitian Hill, on Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, is also credited to Woosnam.
As a player he won in Asia as well, taking the Hong Kong Open in 1987 and the Hyundai Motor Masters on the Korean tour in 1997. GoGolf does not at present list any course designed by Ian Woosnam.
